Free mod for Football Manager 27 and 26

Your Director of Football. With opinions of his own.

The Director reads your save, forms opinions about it, and argues with you. He sits in the game on F7, over whatever screen you're on.

The mod is free and always will be. Membership pays for the hosted version of the chat, and for what comes next.

Adam Aldridge
Director of Football · Crystal Palace, 17th of 20
"Left-back is the fire we need to put out first. Tyrick Mitchell has carried nearly all the minutes there, Borna Sosa has barely featured, and Nathaniel Clyne is 34 and out of contract in June."
From a save, 13 Jan 2026. Unedited.
The Director's panel in Football Manager 27: the manager asks who to let go in the next window, and Crystal Palace's Director of Football, Matt Hobbs, answers from the save: Jean-Philippe Mateta on £85K a week behind Jørgen Strand Larsen, then where to reinvest £50M, Jhon Durán and Iván Fresneda.

What he does

FM gives you a Director of Football. He does almost nothing.

The Director makes him real. He reads your save: your squad, your scouts' reports, the league table, the wage bill, the contracts running down, the kids coming through, who other clubs are bidding for. He forms opinions about all of it. He pushes back when you chase a striker who doesn't fit the way you play. He remembers what you told him the club was supposed to be, and holds you to it when you drift. And he argues the way the man in your save would: a DoF with 4 for Analysing Data talks from his gut; one with 18 for Judging Player Ability is sharper, and much harder to talk round.

Your squad

Depth by position, who's ahead of whom, contracts running down, who has nobody behind them, and where you sit in the league.

Targets, judged by your philosophy

Every target scored against what your club is for, not a generic rating. A verdict on each: sign, scout first, stretch, or no. With the reason, and the reason is arguable.

The market

Deals in progress, interest and bids for your players, scout reports and assignments, spend, fees received, net spend. All from the save.

The chat

Ask him anything about the club. In character, in your currency, a man speaking rather than writing.

The Director's Targets tab in Football Manager 27: shortlisted players with a verdict on each.
Targets: every shortlist judged against your philosophy.

Squad: depth, contracts and who has nobody behind them.

How it works

Install, play, press F7

  1. Install
One folder into your FM folder on Windows, one double-click on a Mac.
  2. Play
Save whenever you'd normally save. The weekly autosave is plenty.
  3. Press F7
No terminal, no Python, no spreadsheet exports, no second plugin, no pressing a key on every screen you visit. It reads the save and keeps up on its own.

It doesn't cheat

He only knows what your scouts know. If you haven't scouted a player, he hasn't seen him, and he'll say so instead of pretending. Attributes reach him through the same fog of war you play with. Nothing is read out of the game's memory; nothing hidden is revealed. Half the point of a Director of Football is that he is sometimes wrong, and you have to decide whether to trust him anyway.

Talking to him

Four ways to reach a model. Pick one in Setup.

The Setup tab in the panel offers four, and you pick one; nothing is edited by hand.

Install problems jump the queue over everything else. Join the Discord, say what you saw in #install-help, and attach BepInEx\LogOutput.log from your FM folder. When he says something stupid, screenshot it for #the-director-said-what; the bad answers are how he gets sharper.

Who's making it

One person, in the evenings, with a Crystal Palace test save that has been through more seasons than I'd like to admit. I built this because I wanted it to exist and nobody else had made it. I run a small games studio in my day-to-day life and have been playing FM/CM for over 30 years. The Director and Calm Dark will keep getting updates through FM27's life.
